Go Wild West

Miss strutting around town in your cowboy boots and a belt with a heavy shiny buckle channelling Madonna's look circa 2000? Well it's just about time time to pull them back out of the closet since Wild West is all the rage again. Want proof?

Exhibit A: RALPH LAUREN spring/summer 2011 collection
A new twist on the classic cowboy style, mixing rusty leather and fringe with shiny metallic fabrics and demure high-neck chiffon dresses that all the decent ladies wore at the time.

Exhibit B: "COWBOYS & ALIENS"
An unexpected sci-fi take on a Western, in which Daniel Craig's mystery cowboy (appropriately named Jake Lonergan) appears out of nowhere wearing a wicked bracelet-like gadget on his left hand, which proves effective against an alien army which is just about to descent on unsuspecting small town. Harrison Ford, Sam Rockwell and Olivia Wilde come along for the ride. To be released this summer.

Exhibit C: "RANGO"
A Western-style cartoon starring a hapless chameleon named Rango with Johnny Depp's voice who walks into a town in the middle of the desert and finds himself an unlikely hero and the only hope for the local animal community in a war against nasty predators. So far looks to be original and totally hilarious. Coming in March.

Great minimalist film posters

My discovery of the day: minimalist posters by Matt Needle. I'm a big fan of quirky minimalist film posters in general, and Mr Needle is doing a pretty awesome job with them. If you'd love to hang one of those on your wall (I certainly would), you may find his full collection available for sale at http://www.mattneedle.co.uk.

New uber-cool "Sucker Punch" trailer

Don't know about you, but I just loooove a cool flick full of sexy ACTION CHICKS kicking the world in the ass, and "SUCKER PUNCH" (opening in less than a month) looks to be packed with the latter. Hey it even has something of a plot: a girl sent to an insane asylum by her step father (true - that whole evil step MOTHER business was getting a bit old) finds refuge in an alternate reality. And boy, that's one hell of a reality (judging by the trailers)! Monsters, crazy war machines, dragons and pretty much the full-on Hell breaks loose on the sweet-faced little girls, who respond with all they got - and they've got plenty! And just look at those warrior outfits! They'll make awesome Halloween costumes - that is if the film lives up to its promise (given by yet another super stylish trailer) and really proves a smash hit.

Kill Bill: One Big Fat Remix

This awesome video, put together by Robert Grigsby Wilson and Kriby Ferguson, shows how "Kill Bill" borrows bits and pieces from so many other films creating a smart and stylish mix. Also on display are Tarantino's very own trademarks remixed again and again. But then ... Tarantino was always open about the fact that he's a film buff director. Try watching as many flicks as he did before pointing fingers!

Rock out! A collection of rocking celebrity looks

My recent post about Balmain and all those rocker jackets in many other collections for spring/summer urged me to put together a whole set of pics of celebrities sporting ROCK-STYLE outfits. Some of those ladies are actual rocker damsels, some are style icons, while others simply played cool edgy characters in films or even just appeared in rock-style photo shoots. But all of them together provide plenty of inspiration for the followers of the ROCKER trend. So enjoy the rock tips from cool chicks!

My top catwalk looks for Spring 2011

When it comes to style I call myself a “passive fashionista.” I don’t live by fashion, I’m not obsessed with it, I don’t spend hours chasing the best deals on designer clothes online (frankly cannot be bothered), I try to only buy things I would actually wear and not just admire in the mirror from time to time, and I don’t feel comfortable spending lots of money on clothes, sticking to economical brands with good quality and cool up-to-date designs.

But I do pay a lot of attention to what I wear and feel a strong need for a fashion infusion every now and then. So having flapped through catwalk photos of spring/summer 2011 collections, I picked out the looks that pleased me most, hence - producing my very first post as occasional FASHION BLOGGER.

1) Balmain: punk rock

Who knows what forced Balmain to swap its usual dressy glamour for "dirty punk" but I'm loving it regardless. It stands closer to my everyday style than all other spring/summer collections I saw.

Another reason for me to love this latest Balmain look is that it would be so easy for me to follow: my studded black leather jacket from Zara still looks good as new, while a t-shirt full of holes and pins will become my next do-it-yourself creative project.

2) D&G: summer romantics

When summer hits the city, the more playful, girly side of my personality often comes out and that's when the style tips from spring/summer D&G collection will come in handy. From stylish vacationer to urban summer chic - there are plenty of sources for inspiration here.

3) Julien MacDonald: lace & macramé

Dresses and tops of macramé and lace is my latest style infatuation. They are just so light and sexy - as if you forgot to change and walked out on the street in your nighty (but no quite).

4) Paul Smith: casual elegance

When I feel a bit more like a lady (it does happen sometimes after all) I opt for casual elegance -the kind that Paul Smith offers for the upcoming spring/summer season.

5) Marc by Marc Jacobs: colourful stripes

Marc Jacobs continues to entertain with the most youthful of his three fashion lines. My season's favourite of his is the sunny multicoloured striped dress. I simply love stripes (can't get enough of them really) and this colourful version of them would be perfect for spring/summer.

6) Elie Tahari: total denim

Naturally I could't bypass this season's big passion for denim - already my favourite fabric for pants (jeans is essentially the only type of pants I wear), shorts and skirts. But to take full advantage of the current all-over denim trend, I'm thinking of getting a loose denim shirt to wear as jacket (at least).
